With cherry cabinets and dark countertops I would use a light color to contrast the dark countertops. If you like color, a light blue or mint green would be nice. If you like earthy tones then I would go with a wheat, light amber, or a rich mustard color. The color choice would also depend on the color of your countertops. If you can, get a color wheel and compare the colors that you have in your countertop and match some colors from the color wheel to see which ones you like best. Remember, the complimenting colors on a color wheel are on opposite sides of the wheel. If you are looking at red on the color wheel, the complimenting colors to red would be on the opposite side of the wheel from red. This is the best way to choose colors that go well together. From there, you can choose the one you like the best.

If you look at a color wheel, green is the complementary color to the red-orange hues of cherry cabinets. But you don't want to use just any shade of green. A "drabber" tone, like olive green, will really set off the rich color of the wood, and also highlight the dark countertops. But if green just isn't your thing, a neutral color like taupe could also work. In the end, it's your decision, but don't make it a hasty one!
