Painting Stair Treads and Risers

by Mike from California

I want to paint my stair treads and risers. What type of paint and primer should I use for each? Should I top them with a polyurethane to protect them from wear?

Use an Alkyd Polyurethane Porch and Deck Enamel. This type of paint can be mixed in many colors, same as regular paints. A real plus is it doesn't need any primer.

The first coat is thinned with mineral spirits, paint thinner, and the second coat is applied full strength. The thinning allows more penetration.

This is the best paint for your application.
