Thinning paint depends on the paint and what you plan on doing with it. Is the paint too thick or too sticky? A water could be used, it usually doesn't take much. A cup or less should be enough. Or you could use a paint conditioner like Floetrol. Floetrol will make the paint spread easier with out over thinning.

You should not thin latex paint... except perhaps for using in a spray machine... if you do... you could add a few half cups of denatured alcohol...
