The steps for preparing a surface with a aged high gloss enamel.

1) Make sure the surface is clean and free of grease, oils and dirt.

2) Lightly sand to dull the sheen a bit. This will help the primer bond to the surface. A chemical deglosser can also be used in place of sanding.

3) Prime with a quick drying universal oil based primer. An acrylic can also be used. The oil base has a better bond to questionable surfaces.

4) If repairs are needed, they are done over the dry primer. Make sure to spot prime the repairs. Also, cracks or gaps can now be caulked.

Now you can paint.
